Hurricane Season: June 1 to November 30

Prepare your homes and lots to withstand a hurricane prior to leaving for a week or more during hurricane season. It is extremely important that you prepare your home prior to departure (see tips below).  In the event of a named hurricane, we will be posting updates to this site on this page.

For more current information: we have a Nettles Island owner that has a Facebook page specifically for anyone wanting news directly related to hurricanes directed at Nettles Island.

How to prepare your home if you will be away during hurricane season

Golf carts, motorcycles and trailers should be strapped down.

All anchors and tie downs should be in place prior to the beginning of hurricane season

Put up your hurricane shutters.

Do not leave valuable documents in your home.

Bicycles, lawn furniture, planters, flowerpots, BBQ grills and other loose items should be stored inside or under your dwelling.  If it’s light enough for you to pick up, it’s light enough for the wind to blow into your neighbor’s house!

Store kayaks inside or under house.

Remove trash cans from in-ground container and store indoors (or under your house).

Empty your refrigerator and freezer and turn them off.  If you do leave them on, put a glass full of water in the freezer and let it freeze.  Place a coin on top and when you return if it has sunk to the bottom, you will know your power was off while you were away.

If you have a storage locker on your property, be sure it is firmly tied down.

Remove boats and watercraft from lifts and tie down on land.   Remove loose items from boat.

Take down flags, flag poles, satellite dishes and antennas.
